National Night Out! What a hot night literally and figuratively! There were several cases of heat cramps and heat exhaustion, myself and our Rescue Chief
included. The estimated crowd at Stafford Marketplace was between 6,000-8,000. Over 600 free bike helmets distributed to area children. They also received some instruct on bike safety. No child had to be turned away. Many thanks to Stafford Volunteer Rescue Squad for participating in the helmet giveaway this year. Our Rescue Chief, Patricia Copeland, did a great job coordinating all the exhibitors and demonstrations. The Sheriff’s department was there in full force.
The Squad had 43 participants learn CPR in the “CPR Anytime” demonstration. Participants pledged to teach 4 other people the skill with the DVD included in the kit and they got to keep the manikin. See the National Night Out Facebook page for some wonderful pictures of the night.

September is Natural Disaster Preparedness Month.
Are you ready do you have a plan?
Do you have a family kit if disaster hits? Here are some hints form FEMA’s website:
Before Thunderstorm and Lightning
To prepare for a thunderstorm, you should do the following:
• To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
• Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
• Postpone outdoor activities.
• Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
• Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
• Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
• Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
• Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.
