Independence Day in Aquia Harbour was a great place to be this year. It started out at 7:30am with the Firecracker 5K Race/Walk with fellow squad members Jayne and Mike Toellner, Sharon Schaefer and Nancy Rose. We all finished in less than an hour; meeting folks we had not seen in a long time. It was impressive having all the families participating. At 9:30 it was time to lineup for the parade. The crowds along Aquia Drive were very enthusiastic. Most people even remembered to salute the America flag, which Mike Schaefer carried. Janet Schroeder, Angela Wilhelm and I distributed candy along the route as Bob Zink drove the ambulance. Down at Lions’ Field we set up shop and thankfully there were no injuries or lost children requiring our assistance this year. I hope everyone is working and playing smart in all this heat. Hydration before, during and after any strenuous outdoor activity is the smart way to go. Leave these activities for the cooler early morning or evening hours. If you notice someone not acting quite right, red-faced, not sweating despite the heat; get that person to a shaded or air-conditioned spot, loosen clothing, and cool them off, but watch for shivering. If they are alert give them a cool drink of water. And don’t forget to call 911.
