| Save Your Heart for Love - a Success Story
EMS Week 2010 has come and gone! But 118 children and their parents are better informed on safety prevention.
The members of the Aquia Harbour Volunteer Rescue Squad celebrated EMS Week by conducting its children's first aid mini course "Save Your Heart for Love" in the parking lot at Kohl's Department Store in Stafford Marketplace on May 19th. This is the 17th year for the program and the 2nd in affiliation with the staff from Kohl's. After checking in at registration the children were guided to eight different stations to learn about the ambulance, bleeding control and bandaging, Heimlich maneuver, choking prevention, poison prevention, fire safety, use of 911, and bike safety. After completing the bike safety station the children were fitted with free bike helmets. The bike helmets were purchased with a grant from the Virginia Department of Health Division of Injury and Violence Prevention.
Volunteers from Potomac Hills Station Co.10 displayed their fire apparatus and conducted tours. The crew from Stafford County Engine 9 was also on hand.
As Providence would have it, during the program two four year old boys rode down the parking lot without bike helmets, they were quickly led through registration and over to bike safety. Thirty minutes later they were riding home with big smiles and new, properly fitted bike helmets. |
